The 124.5-hectare area is designated for the establishment of a green technologies hub in the Western Cape and is expected to attract R1.8 billion in investment by 2022. This follows the confirmed
designation of the Atlantis SEZ status by Cabinet on 8 June 2018.
Minister Davies hails potential of Atlantis SEZ
Minister Rob Davies has highlighted the benefits of the newly launched Atlantis Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
Minister Davies joined President Cyril Ramaphosa as he officially launched the new SEZ on Thursday, 6 December 2018.
A combined R1.8billion is expected to be invested in the SEZ by 2022, with the creation of 1 200 direct jobs. A total of 24 000 full time equivalent jobs are also expected to be created
in the SEZ’s 20-year lifespan. This is in line with our Industrial Policy and will contribute towards the objectives of National Development Plan (NDP).
Invitation to Participate in the Outward Selling Mission to India
The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) invites interested companies to apply to participate in the Outward Selling Mission (OSM) to India.
The Mission forms part of the dti's objective of growing exports of South African value-added products and services in high growth markets in Asia. The closing date for receipt of

Deputy Minister Magwanishe welcomes R502-million investment into ELIDZ
Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Bulelani Magwanishe and Eastern Cape MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism Oscar Mabuyane recently welcomed a R502-million
investment into the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) by Meek Mines South Africa and Nulatex Condoms South Africa. The chief executive officer of the ELIDZ, Simphiwe Kondlo,
said the investment would create 450 jobs.
Minister Davies launches TWIMS in Durban
Minister Rob Davies addressed the launch of the Toyota Wessels Institute for Manufacturing Studies (TWIMS) in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, 26 November 2018.
TWIMS is dedicated to the development of manufacturing and manufacturing-related executives, managers and government officials in Africa. Through its partnership with Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), the institute will offer an MBA specialising in manufacturing.
Minister Davies said that the TWIMS will accelerate the building of a deep manufacturing culture that South Africa is in need of to drive our own domestic demands and produce value added products in different sectors of the economy.

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) invites exporters to apply to participate in an Outward Selling Mission (OSM) to Canada scheduled to take
place from 11 to 14 March 2019.
The mission provides participants with the opportunity to meet and source information from Canadian and international mining companies as well as equipment suppliers and mining

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) hosted the 3rd National Industrial Parks Symposium, under the theme, Industrial Parks as Catalysts for the Rural and Township Industrial Economy.
The two-day event provided a platform for engagement with key stakeholders and experts on the acceleration of the industrial parks as catalysts for developing the rural and township industrial economy.
The Symposium offered expert knowledge and experience from speakers and thought leaders on key topics affecting the industrial parks. Delegates had an opportunity to participate in plenary sessions.

Launch of R50-Million First Phase Revitalised Phuthaditjhaba Industrial Park.
The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Bulelani Magwanishe, officially launched the revitalised Phuthaditjhaba Industrial Park in Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality,
Free State, on 30 October 2018. The industrial park has been revitalised for an amount of R50 million approved by the dti under its Industrial Parks Revitalisation Programme.
The revitalisation comprised security upgrades, including fencing, street lighting, the installation of boom and pedestrian gates, CCTV cameras and control room, and the refurbishment of
high mast lights.
the dti 2018 National Natural Ingredients Conference
the dti, in partnership with the Centre for the Promotion of Imports (an agency of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs), hosted the National Natural Ingredients Conference at the
Industrial Development Corporation from 15 to 16 October 2018. The conference reviewed the Natural Ingredients and Cosmetics Products Export Strategy, which was implemented in 2015.

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) is reviewing the regulation of the sugar industry to address the recognition of alternative associations such as the South African Farmers
Development Association (SAFDA). The aim is to ensure broad-based representation in the industry, improved competitiveness, and to promote transformation and inclusive growth. The Act being

Amendment to Regulation 2 and 8(4) of the National Gambling Regulations of 2004
The Minister of Trade and Industry (the dti) has published amendments to Regulations 2 and 8(4) of the National Gambling Regulations of 2004 under Government Gazette No 41913, Notice No. 972
dated 21 September 2018.
Regulations 2, 8(4) and Form NGB 1/1 and Form NGB 1/2 amends the said sections and Forms to provide for, Inter alia acceptance of digital photos; Capturing of the exclusions forms by the
National Gambling Board; The need to provide for internal control measures by Provincial Licensing Authorities to enforce exclusions measures; The time period within which gambling machines
must be re-certified; To provide for the correct address of the NGB on the NGB 1/1 and NGB 1/2 forms; Provide for the correct address of the NGB on the NGB 1/1 and NGB 1/2 forms; Regulation 2
deals with excluded persons and Regulation 8(4) deals with re-certification of gambling machines and devices. Gazette No 41913

UNGA73 kicks off in New York
President Cyril Ramaphosa attends the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA73), taking place in New York, United States, from 25 to 27 September 2018.
The theme for this year's session is "Making the United Nations relevant to all people: global leadership and shared responsibilities for peaceful equitable and sustainable societies".

National B-BBEE Rural and Township Economy Summit
the dti hosted the innaugural National B-BBEE Rural and Township Economy Summit in East London from 19-20 July 2018. The summit was a partnership between the dti, Black Economic Empowerment
Advisory Council (BEEAC) and the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
The summit brought together 1400 delegates from across the country to seek solutions to the revival of the often neglected rural and township economic sectors.
Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Rob Davies (MP) has published a notice of intention to introduce the National Gambling Amendment Bill 2018 into Parliament under Government
Gazette number 41787, notice number 742, dated 20 July 2018.
The National Gambling Amendment Bill 2018 amends the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004 to, inter alia, reposition the National Gambling Board as a national gambling regulator; transfer the
regulation of bets on national lottery, foreign lottery, lottery results and sports pools to the National Lotteries Commission; prohibit dog racing and bets on dog racing; provide for
the procedure for the forfeiture of unlawful winnings to the National Gambling Regulator; recognise self-regulation in the horseracing industry; regulate the electronic form of bingo;
and enhance the powers and duties of the gambling inspector.
Gazetting of Regulations on Mediation Rules and Commencement of Investment Act
The Protection of Investment Act, 2015 (Act No. 22 of 2015) has commenced as from 13 July 2018. The Act accords to investors the necessary standards of protection that is consistent
with the Constitution. The accompanying Regulations on Mediation Rules also commenced on the aforementioned date. In terms of the Act, the Regulations set out the administrative and
procedural components for mediation as the alternative dispute resolution mechanism.

Intellectual Property Policy of the Republic of South Africa Phase I
Following the publication of the Intellectual Property (IP) Consultative Framework in 2016, the Draft IP Policy – Phase I was developed by the dti in partnership with the inter-Ministerial
Committee on Intellectual Property (IMCIP) and published for comment in August 2017. The IMCIP considered stakeholder submissions and amended the policy document accordingly. The approved
Intellectual Property Policy of the Republic of South Africa Phase I will be published in the Government Gazette.
The IMCIP will now initiate Phase II by developing a Consultative Framework addressing issues identified in the in-built agenda and deliberate upon the most efficient means of
implementing the policy proposals discussed.

The Agro Processing Support Scheme (APSS) seeks to stimulate investment in the agro-processing sector. The objective is to increase capacity, create employment,
competitiveness and enhance transformation. It is a cost sharing grant to a maximum of R20 million.
